Les cours du chapitre

  1. Condition 'as long as'

To say that a result depends on a condition being kept, English uses as long as, provided (that), providing (that) and on condition that. They are stronger than a simple if: they insist that the condition is the only way to get the result.

    • Form
    • Meaning
    • Tense rule

À retenir :as long as / provided (that) / providing (that) + present simple introduce the condition; the result clause takes the future.

  2. Expressing wish

wish expresses a desire about a situation the speaker cannot change, or regret about a past action. The tense used after wish is one step back in time — this is why it is called an unreal tense.

    • Wish about the present
    • Regret about the past
    • Wish for a change in the future
    • It's high time / It's about time

À retenir :wish + past simple (present), + past perfect (regret), + would + stem (desired change); it's high time + past simple works the same way.

  3. Result with 'so ... that'

To link a quality or a quantity to the consequence it produces, English uses so ... that and such ... that. The choice depends on the word placed between so/such and that.

    • so + adjective / adverb + that
    • so many / so much / so few / so little + that
    • such + noun phrase + that
    • Joining two sentences

    À retenir :so + adjective/adverb + that, so many/much + noun + that, such + (a/an) adjective + noun + that all express consequence.
