1. Short adjectives

   To compare two things, a short adjective takes -er and is followed by than.

   • The form

   • Two syllables in -y

2. Long adjectives

   An adjective of two syllables or more does not take -er: it is preceded by more.

3. Irregular comparatives

   Four very common adjectives build their comparative without following any rule. They must be learnt by heart.
