1. Regular verbs

   The past simple tells what happened at a finished moment in the past. With a regular verb it is easy: you add -ed.

2. Irregular verbs

   About two hundred English verbs do not take -ed in the past: they change their form, and these forms are learnt by heart.

3. Negatives and questions

   In the negative and in the question, the past simple uses one auxiliary for every verb: did. The main verb then goes back to its base form.
