  1. The /t/ ending

The -ed of the past is written in one way but said in three. When the verb ends with a voiceless sound, the -ed is heard as /t/.

    • When we hear /t/
    • The voiced answer /d/
    • No extra syllable

خلاصة :After a voiceless sound the -ed is heard /t/ (worked, watched); after a voiced sound it is heard /d/ (played, opened), with no extra syllable.

  2. The /ɪd/ ending

There is one case where the -ed adds a whole syllable to the verb: when the verb already ends with the sound /t/ or /d/.

    • The rule
    • Why a new syllable
    • Do not generalise

خلاصة :A verb ending in the sound /t/ or /d/ takes an -ed said /ɪd/ and gains one syllable (want → wanted).

    • The three cases
    • How to test
    • Sound, not letter

خلاصة :One rule, three sounds: /ɪd/ after /t/ and /d/, /t/ after a voiceless sound, /d/ after every voiced sound.
